Ozempic Alternatives in Australia: A Comparison
Share
Ozempic has quickly become a well-known name in the weight loss world, attracting attention for its impressive results. However, it's not the only GLP-1 medication available. This guide will provide insights on Ozempic alternatives in Australia, including other GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro, as well as natural alternatives to Ozempic.
GLP-1 Agonists: The Basics
GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medications that mimic the action of the body’s GLP-1 hormone, which regulates blood sugar levels and manages appetite. These medications are primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and, in some instances, obesity. By stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin and slowing the rate at which food is digested, GLP-1 agonists help keep you feeling fuller for longer, potentially reducing overall calorie intake and leading to weight loss.
Comparing Alternatives to Ozempic: GLP-1 Medications
Read on to learn about Ozempic and some of its popular alternatives:
Ozempic (Semaglutide)
- Usage and Dosage: Ozempic is administered as a subcutaneous injection (into the layer of fatty tissue between the skin and the muscle) once a week, under the skin of the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. The initial dose is 0.25mg once a week for four weeks, which can be increased to 0.5mg and then to 1mg if tolerated and under medical supervision.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, and headache.
- Cost: Ozempic is not subsidised by the PBS for weight loss, so it currently costs around $130 per month.
- Eligibility/Availability: Ozempic is officially approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use by diabetes patients, but it can also be prescribed off-label for weight loss at your doctor's discretion.
Wegovy (Semaglutide)
- Usage and Dosage: Wegovy, like Ozempic, is administered as a subcutaneous weekly injection. The starting dose is 0.25mg, which can be increased up to 2.4mg once a week if tolerated and under prescriber supervision.
- Side Effects: Similar to Ozempic, common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and constipation.
- Cost: Since Wegovy has not yet launched in Australia, we cannot provide a cost estimate for this Ozempic alternative.
- Eligibility/Availability: Wegovy is a well-known Ozempic alternative for weight loss. Although it has been approved by the TGA for weight management, it is not yet available in Australia due to global shortages of its active ingredient, semaglutide.
Saxenda (Liraglutide)
- Usage and Dosage: Saxenda is administered as a subcutaneous injection once daily, starting at 0.6mg. The dose is increased weekly by 0.6mg and, if tolerated and under the supervision of your prescriber, up to 3mg daily.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
- Cost: Saxenda currently costs approximately $400 per month as it is not subsidised by the PBS for weight loss.
- Eligibility/Availability: Saxenda is a popular Ozempic alternative for weight loss. It is available in Australia and is indicated to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. According to the TGA, it is recommended for adult patients with obesity who have an initial Body Mass Index (BMI) of:
- ≥ 30 kg/m2 (obese); or
- ≥ 27 kg/m2 to < 30 kg/m2 (overweight) with at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as dysglycaemia (pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus), hypertension, dyslipidaemia, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)
- Usage and Dosage: Mounjaro is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week, starting at 2.5mg for the first four weeks. If tolerated and under the supervision of your prescriber, the dose may be increased to 5mg weekly. After an additional four weeks, it may be further increased by 2.5mg increments, up to a maximum dose of 15mg once weekly.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues similar to other GLP-1 agonists.
- Cost: You can expect to pay around $600 per month for Mounjaro.
- Eligibility/Availability: Mounjaro is not yet approved by the TGA for weight loss in Australia. It is currently only approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes to improve blood glucose levels. That being said, the off-label prescription of Mounjaro does occur, at the discretion of health professionals.
Zepbound (Tirzepatide)
- Usage and Dosage: Zepbound, like Mounjaro, is administered as a subcutaneous injection once weekly. It is available in three doses: 5mg, 10mg, and 15mg.
- Side Effects: Similar to Mounjaro, common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation.
- Availability: Zepbound has been approved by the U.S. Food And Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss but it is not yet available in Australia. Unlike Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda, which are developed by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, Mounjaro and Zepbound are manufactured by US company, Eli Lilly.
Pharmaceutical Ozempic Alternatives: Understanding the Science
As mentioned, GLP-1 medications such as Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Ozempic all work by reducing appetite. However, they do so through slightly different mechanisms.
Single-Agonist Drugs: Wegovy and Ozempic
Wegovy and Ozempic are classified as single-agonist drugs, activating the GLP-1 pathway in the body. By stimulating this pathway, these medications help control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite, leading to weight loss. The GLP-1 pathway is primarily responsible for enhancing insulin secretion in response to meals, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety, which helps reduce overall calorie intake.
Dual-Agonist Drugs: Zepbound and Mounjaro
On the other hand, Zepbound and Mounjaro are known as dual-agonist drugs. They activate not just the GLP-1 pathway but also the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) pathway. According to medical experts, this dual agonist approach appears to potentially offer enhanced weight loss benefits compared to single-agonist drugs. The combination of GLP-1 and GIP activation can result in more significant weight reduction because it simultaneously enhances insulin secretion, reduces appetite, and increases insulin sensitivity.
Natural Alternatives to Ozempic
While medications can provide significant support in weight loss, there is growing interest in natural Ozempic alternatives. These include dietary changes and supplements that increase GLP-1 levels naturally.
Dietary Changes
Eating more fibre, lean protein, healthy fats, and water-rich fruits and vegetables can help increase GLP-1 levels naturally. These nutrient-dense foods not only support weight loss but also help maintain overall health.
Supplements
Certain supplements, such as berberine, curcumin, and ginseng, have been shown in small studies to boost GLP-1 levels. However, it's important to consult with your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen.
Effectiveness of Natural Ozempic Alternatives
Although natural alternatives can help increase GLP-1 levels, the results might not be as pronounced as those achieved with medication-related Ozempic alternatives. Medications tend to maintain higher levels of GLP-1 for a longer time, providing more consistent support for weight loss. Therefore, while natural methods can be beneficial, they may not offer the same level of efficacy as pharmaceutical options.
It's essential to consult with your doctor for clinical judgement in order to determine the best approach for your health journey.
The Importance of Nutrition While Taking GLP-1 Medications
A major challenge with GLP-1 medications like Ozempic is their tendency to reduce hunger and food intake. This makes it even more essential to focus on the quality of your diet, ensuring your nutritional needs are met despite eating less. When food intake is reduced, each bite becomes more important for maintaining overall health.
Therefore, it's crucial to consume nutrient-dense foods to avoid missing out on vital vitamins and minerals during your weight loss journey.
